We all lose bits and pieces from time to time down the back of the sofa, so as you can imagine when we bring furniture into the workshop and take off the old covering all sorts of things some to light!
Anything of value is of course returned to our customers
These are some of the things we found:
Lots of coins – old and new
Enough Peanuts and Raisins to stock a pub!
A bullet
A pair of dentures
Pairs of knickers – some pretty sexy
Passport
Personal Diary
Keys
Tights, hankies and odd socks – so that’s where they went to!
Plenty of knitting and Crochet needles
Any number of Cigarette lighters, pens, pencils, rubbers, combs and scissors.
Knives, Forks and Spoons – too many TV dinners?
Calculator
Masses of kids marbles – strange that one
Old newspapers with fascinating adverts for products you don’t see any more.
But unfortunately not… an engagement ring that was lost and we were asked to look for.
My favorite story from the workroom:
While we were re-upholstering an Ercol suite with wooden arms, which included the stripping down and re-polishing of the woodwork we received a special request from the customer.
She asked if we could see some small indentations in the top of the arm, which indeed we found.
She told us that these had been made by her grandchild when she first pulled herself up on the arm of the chair to walk, and bit into the arm.
Naturally she would like this memento of that special occasion preserved if possible. We were of course happy to oblige, so we carefully stripped and sanded the wood as usual but took special care round the marks.
When the chair was re-polished it was as good as new, but these special memories were still preserved.
