Selina Lake and Debi Treloar have shown in their new book Bazaar Style what you can do with some old furniture and a lot of imagination!
It brings a whole new dimension to upholstery, whether it’s a pastime you enjoy yourself or you like to call in the professionals.
Most of the time I see furniture re-upholstered in smart good-quality fabrics to fit in with a coordinating décor. So what a shock to see re-cycled prints in patchwork, brightly coloured cushions complimented by brightly painted re-cycled cabinets.
In truth much of what you see in this book is a reflection of the very latest in design – what you can put together here from a good-quality second-hand frame, some interesting fabrics and some imagination could cost you a fortune from a top designer. And, most importantly in this Ikea mass-produced world – it’s individual to you!
At the moment I’m very much into the early Parker Knoll chairs with beautiful curved wooden arms – often solid mahogany, re-polished, then covered in brightly coloured fabric. They make a superb accent piece, especially in small room.
Chairs like this can be had from time-to-time on e-bay (but sellers are beginning to understand their value, so they may not be cheap) also try auction houses and house clearances – or maybe you’re staring to see that old chair Granny was going to throw out in a different light!
